What are edaphic deserts?
Deserts are areas which have less than 250mm (10in) of rain a year, and this includes not only the hot deserts, but also cold deserts. A third type, known as edaphic desert, is one where, despite an adequate rainfall, the soil is too poor to support plants. Edaphic deserts occur on some volcanic islands. Cold deserts cover 16% of the world's surface. Hot and edaphic deserts cover 18% of the world's land.
